Standing Rock Water Protectors, September 2016
Standing Rock Water Protectors, September 2016

IITC works to defend the rights of Indigenous Peoples as affirmed in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and other international and regional human rights standards, and to ensure that States, corporations and the UN System fully respect, recognize and implement these Rights and are held accountable for violations. IITC provides training, capacity-building and access for Indigenous Peoples to utilize a human rights framework to advance the struggles of their Nations and communities "on the ground," and to engage effectively in UN human rights bodies and mechanisms. Key human rights focus areas for IITC include cultural rights and protection of sacred sites, prisoners’ rights, access to justice, right to health, racial discrimination, rights of Indigenous women and children, water and land rights, Free Prior and Informed Consent, Truth in History, decolonization and protection for Human, Treaty and Environmental rights defenders.

Reaffirming that Indigenous Peoples, in the exercise of their rights, should be free from discrimination of any kind.
