UN Special Rapporteur Calls for Inputs from Indigenous Peoples

Geneva – UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Francisco Cali Tzay (Maya Cakchiquel) has issued a call for inputs to his two thematic reports in 2024. These reports will address the situation of Mobile Indigenous Peoples and the situation of Indigenous persons with disabilities. Both reports will be presented to the Human Rights Council and to the UN General Assembly later this year.

The report on Mobile Indigenous Peoples (also known as Nomadic Peoples) will focus on pastoralists, herders, hunter-gatherers, shifting agriculturalists, seafaring/maritime Peoples and other mobile Peoples who self-identify as Indigenous under international human rights law. Examples include Sami reindeer herders in northern Scandinavia, Bedouins in the Middle East and Maasai pastoralists in eastern Africa. The submission deadline for submissions for this report is 15 March 2024.

The report on Indigenous Persons with Disabilities will pay special attention to their human rights and fundamental freedoms. The Special Rapporteur’s report will build upon the findings of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMPRIP), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) who have previously examined this issue. The submission deadline for this report is February 15.

In 2001, the United Nations Commission on Human Rights  decided to appoint a Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples as part of the system of thematic Special Procedures. Francisco Cali Tzay was appointed Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in March 2020 and took up the role on 1 May 2020.
