Indigenous Peoples’ Questionnaire on Pesticides and the Right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) launched

Indigenous Peoples’ Questionnaire on Pesticides and the Right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) has been officially launched

18/06/2025
The FAO/WHO Task Force on the Review of the International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management (ICCPM) is pleased to launch a global questionnaire designed specifically for Indigenous Peoples. This questionnaire aims to gather your perspectives, experiences, and concerns related to pesticide use and management, and to ensure that Indigenous Peoples right to a Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) is fully respected. The questionnaire is available in the six official UN languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish (the original text has been drafted in English with not official translations).

The deadline for submission is 16 July 2025. Answer to the survey HERE!

This initiative directly responds to the 2022 call by the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), which urged FAO and WHO to amend the ICCPM to better reflect Indigenous Peoples’ rights, especially the right to FPIC. In October 2024, the FAO Committee on Agriculture (COAG 29) formally adopted the decision to review the Code. A Joint FAO/WHO Task Force is collaborating with the Working Group of the Joint Meeting on Pesticides Management (JMPM), with strong emphasis on participatory methods and inclusive engagement with Indigenous Peoples. The FAO/WHO Taskforce aims to ensure a participatory process with Indigenous Peoples from the seven sociocultural regions of the world to include their views, concerns and reflections.

The purpose of this questionnaire is to create space for Indigenous Peoples as rights and knowledge holders to contribute directly to the shaping of global pesticide management standards. Your input will inform the identification of gaps, risks, and culturally appropriate solutions, will ensure that the revised ICCPM upholds the right to a Free, Prior and Informed Consent for Indigenous Peoples.

We encourage all Indigenous organizations, communities, and individuals to participate in this important consultation.
