A JOURNEY TO FREEDOM

Richard Oakes, Alcatraz, and the Red Power Movement

 

Join California Historical Society and the International Indian Treaty Council (IITC) for an evening of learning about Richard Oakes, the Native American leader who was instrumental in the takeovers of Alcatraz, Fort Lawton, and Pit River, and whose assassination in 1972 galvanized the Trail of Broken Treaties march on Washington, DC.

Speakers include Professor Kent Blansett, author of A Journey to Freedom Richard Oakes, Alcatraz, and the Red Power Movement, and Andrea Carmen of the International Indian Treaty Council. The event will be MC’d by Morning Star Gali and representative from the Oakes family will be present and joining the conversation.

This event will be held at the California Historical Society, 678 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94105.

General Admission: $5.00, Member Admission: FREE, Youth Admission (under 18): FREE
