In April 2011, IITC filed Communication and Appeal for Urgent Action on the desecration and destruction of the Sacred Shellmound at Sogorea Te (Glen Cove) to the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief and the UN Independent Expert in the Field of Cultural Rights. These three UN human rights mandate holders sent a first -time joint communication to the United States, which combined with Indigenous Peoples’ local activism and resistance, resulted in the first co-management agreement between the State of California and Indigenous Peoples for a cultural easement to protect the site.
